Prasanna, theatre director and social activist, has appealed to the State government to immediately announce a special package for the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC).
In a letter to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Mr. Prasanna said that Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation has given employment to over 40,000 families. However, from 1995 onwards and till recently it was on the verge of collapse due to political negligence and administrative failure, resulting in the number of weavers attached to it reducing to only 10,000.
“We urge the government to release ₹30 core special package and resolve problems faced by KHDC and hand loom weavers,” he said in the letter.
“The government must immediately respond to problems of handloom weavers. If it fails to protect the interests of weavers, it must hand over KHDC, which was founded for weavers, to the weavers and they will revive it,” he added.
