For England all-rounder Ben Stokes is playing in place of Alex Hales (injured).

The last match at the venue had seen England rattle a world record score of 481 for six, against Australia. For today’s game, the wicket also full of runs.

With the World Cup less than 12 months away, to be played at the same venues, this series is being billed as a contest between two of the strongest contenders for the 50-overs mega event.

England are the top ranked team in the ICC list and have claimed their last 10 bilateral series, India have won their last nine series.

“We back ourselves to bowl first and let the opposition put a score on the board, we have to continue the pattern we have followed. We want to check the bench strength of our team. It’s an opportunity for our guys,” said India captain Virat Kohli at the toss.

England captain Eoin Morgan also admitted he would have liked to chase: “We would have liked to chase. Dawid Malan into the squad, Root up to three, and Stokes at five.”
