‘Soorma’: Diljit Dosanjh says, ‘person only gets defeated when he gives up from his heart’


Diljit Dosanjh is all set to impress us with his upcoming film Soorma which is based on the life of India’s popular hockey player, Sandeep Singh. The film will be showcasing the tough journey of Sandeep Singh, overcoming the injury to become one of the best hockey players. Soorma is releasing this Friday. Sumit Rajguru from Free Press Journal recently had a candid chat with the lead actor of the film, Diljit Dosanjh.

Diljit is known for his perfection of every role in his films. However, preparing for Soorma was indeed a learning experience from. Talking about what he learned from Sandeep Singh’s life-changing experiences, Diljit said, “Insaan Ko Kabhi Haar Nahi Manani Chahiye! (A person shouldn’t give up).” Well, as we have seen in the making videos, Diljit Dosanjh has learned a lot of hockey with hard work and dedication. During the preparation, when we asked about his memorable incident, he said, “Hockey was my memorable incident of preparation. I’m glad that not any incident or accident happened during the training.”


Soorma means a true hero or a fighter. There are a lot of qualities you need to be the real Soorma of your life. When asked about qualities to be real Soorma of life, “First of all, he shouldn’t give up despite having any crucial circumstances. A person only gets defeated when he gives up from his heart. Whether it is sports or other activities, winning and losing will always be there but it’s all about your own desire which will make you achieve something good in your particular field.”

Interestingly, when asked about what he will choose between singing and acting, he said, “Obviously Singing! Because I’m a singer first. I became actor later after I gained some fame into singing. And after all, Pehla Pyaar Toh Pehla Hi Hota Hai (First love will always be the first one only).” “I don’t want anybody to make a biopic on me, I won’t let anyone make it on me”, Diljit added, after he was asked about a biopic on him.

Diljit made his Bollywood debut from the controversial hit film, Udta Punjab. On that note, when he was asked about what improvement happened in Punjab in terms of drugs after the release of the film, he said, “We together need to improve. Films can create awareness, then now it’s up to government how will they measure that improvement. A common man can only get affected due to his surroundings. So, Udta Punjab did create awareness, but how much has state improved that only state government can tell us.”

Apart from giving some successful films, Diljit’s flop film, Welcome To New York made critics question his film’s choices. When asked about it, the actor stated, “Welcome To New York was a different concept. It was not a film but a story of the backstage drama of an award ceremony. I felt good when it was narrated to me, but audiences didn’t like it. My mind could have got diverted if that film would have done good business at the box office. But, audiences gave it a suitable response. I’m happy!”

Soorma’s buzz is already in the masses and when Diljit was asked about why people should watch Soorma in theatres, he said, “Soorma is a story of life learning experiences. Despite hockey being a centre point of the film, it gives you a reality check of how people behave when you are going through a bad or low phase of your life. Sandeep Singh has experienced that phase. Hence, the story will get connect to common people as well.”

Well, Soorma also stars Taapsee Pannu and Angad Bedi in lead roles. Directed by Shaad Ali, Soorma is produced by Chitrangda Singh and Sony Pictures. Let’s see how the film would connect to the audiences on July 13, 2018.
