BHUBANESWAR:  Odisha Police have written to Ministry of Civil Aviation for declaring Bada Danda or the Grand Road in Puri as ‘no fly zone’ during Rath Yatra. However, police are yet to receive a response in this regard. “We have written to the Ministry of Civil Aviation for declaring Bada Danda as no fly zone,” Odisha DGP Dr RP Sharma told The Express.

Police said they have no objection if helicopters and aeroplanes fly at high altitude, over 30,000 feet. Besides this, Odisha Police had also requested Ministry of Home Affairs for deploying National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, but they have not received any response. Dr Sharma held a high-level meeting on Wednesday in Puri ahead of the mega festival.

The DGP informed that the security personnel have already been mobilised in the City. About two units of rapid action force, two units of Odisha Swift Action Force, one units each of National Disaster Response Force and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force besides two units of Odisha Special Tactical Unit will be deployed in Puri during Rath Yatra.  About 140 platoons of armed police will also be deployed during the chariot festival.
