Seeds not germinating in Subarnapur

After pest attack and low rainfall, non-germination of most seeds supplied by the State Government has added to the woes of farmers in Subarnpur district this year.

“The early monsoon this year had raised a hope for bumper harvest. But paddy seeds bought from licensed outlet of the Odisha State Seeds Corporation Limited are not germinating. 

It has only added to the woes of farmers who battled with drought last year,” said a farmer leader.

Some farmers said paddy seeds sown by them the last week of June have not germinated. Only about 10 per cent of the seeds got sprouted, they added.

While the Government claims that the farmers are being given high yielding seeds, non-germinating of seeds has raised several questions.

The farmers have demanded immediate assistance from the Agriculture Department and the administration to bail them out of the problem.
