Ujjain: Most awaited long spell of rain lashed the city with the heavy downpour starting from Tuesday night and lasting till Wednesday afternoon. According to Government Jiwajirao Observatory, during last 24 hours five inches of rain was recorded and during this season total 11 inches of rain was recorded till now.
Rain clouds are still cruising in the sky of the region and within next 24 hours medium downpour is likely, the weatherman said. After heavy downpour during the last 24 hours the contamination level in Kshipra’s water increased as dirty black coloured water of drainages is getting mixed with the river’s water. According to devotees who had come to Ramghat to take holy dip and perform worship, the water was stinking.
Water level of river Gambhir increases
According to Gambhir Dam in charge, the dam received 101.947 Mc Ft water till now and water arrival still continues from catchment areas of the river. According to public health engineering (PHE) officials the dam can supply further 16 days potable water to the city. On Tuesday the dam had 169.583 Mc Ft water and on Wednesday till 8 PM it had 271.530 Mc Ft water.
Electricity wire breaks, 3 dogs electrocuted
Due to heavy rain a loose high tension electric wire broke at Ramghat due to which three dogs were killed and three men had a close shave. Some devotees present at Ramghat informed the electricity department.
Heavy downpour exposes UMC lack of preparations
First heavy rainfall in the city exposed the lack of preparations of Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) to deal with water logging problems of the city. Lower area colony residents faced water logging problem in the city. People in Rishi Nagar sector A, Arvind Nagar, Goverdhandham, Shastri Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Dhancha Bhawan, Barahkholi, Nageshwardham, Mahesh Nagar, MR-5, Agar Road, Indira Nagar, Mohan Nagar, Virat Nagar, Yadav Nagar, Naisadak, Topkhana, Indoregate, Begumpura and many other areas of the city faced water logging problems. In Begumbag colony due to heavy encroachments in the area over drainages, dirty water entered in the houses. During the rain the encroachments of the areas were removed to ensure free flow of rainwater by UMC team.
Mayor inspects rain hit areas
Mayor Meena Jonwal visited areas affected by water logging problems. She started her visit from Nanakheda stadium from where BJP’s canvassing campaign in the form of jan ashirwad yatra will start. She also visited Dhannalal Ki Chawl, Shanti Nagar, Sindhi Colony, Teenbatti Chouraha, Agar Road, Indira Nagar, Chimanganj Mandi, Dewasgate and Begumbag Colony.
She took stock of the situation and instructed the officials to carry out sanitation works in the areas. She urged residents of the areas to remove encroachments from the drainages and let the rainwater flow freely. The mayor also instructed to cover open chambers of drainages and to get patchwork done immediately to ward off any untoward incident during water logging situation in such areas.
The mayor expressed her unhappiness over cleanliness at Chimanganj Mandi, Dewasgate, Indoregate and other areas of the city she visited. On this occasion deputy commissioners Manoj Pathak and Yogendra Patel and health officer Purushottam Dube were present.
Flood relief camps set up
Flood relief camps were set up at seven locations in the city by tehsildar Ujjain. The duties of the camp officer and various employees have been fixed on all these camps. The tehsildar appointed nayab tehsildar Poonam Singh Shekhawat for Primary School, Panvasa camp. Jivajiganj HS School, Nutan HS School and Jaysingpura located camps will be taken care of by revenue inspector KP Mehra.
The tehsildar also setup flood relief camp in Madhav Nagar HS School, Gangaur Darwaza camp, Indira Nagar Camp and Nanakheda Camp. The tehsildar also established a flood control office where tehsildar Deepali Jadhav will be incharge officer.
