Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi today said the Karnataka government is ignoring the issue of women's safety in Bengaluru, citing a recent incident of harassment of a woman passenger by a cab driver.
"This is the third case of harassment of a woman passenger by a cab driver in #Bengaluru, in less than a month. My directions to @CPBlr (Bengaluru Police Comissioner T Suneel Kumar) to invoke criminal liability of cab aggregators like @Olacabs and @Uber_India has had no effect," the minister said in a tweet.
"I am worried about how the Karnataka government is totally ignoring women safety in the city. Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy should pay attention to this critical issue," she added.
Gandhi had earlier said that she took up the issue of cab safety with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, urging him to ensure that companies adhere to all safety guidelines.
She wrote to Gadkari after several cases of taxi drivers misbehaving with women passengers were reported.
On July 1, an Ola cab driver allegedly attempted to abduct a woman passenger enroute to the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The driver was later arrested.
Last month, another Ola driver was arrested for allegedly molesting a 26-year-old architect on her way to the airport.
