Plea claims work goes on at all hours

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) told the Bombay High Court on Wednesday that it will map south Mumbai to measure noise levels in where construction work for the Metro 3 corridor is on.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Abhay Oka and Riyaz Chagla was hearing a plea filed by south Mumbai resident Robin Jaisinghani, urging that noise caused by Metro work doesn’t exceed noise rules limits, and no activities carried out during the night.

The plea said, “There are no fixed hours during which construction activity is to be carried out. Sometimes construction activity is carried out till midnight, and sometimes even later till the early hours, making it impossible to carry out any normal activity.”

In the last hearing, the court had rapped MMRCL for wanting to carry out construction work at night in violation of noise rules.

It had said, “How can we pass a judicial order permitting you to carry out work whole day and night when you are not ready to make a statement that you would adhere to noise pollution rules?”

In the last hearing, MMRCL submitted a report by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute that the average noise level in Mumbai is at 80 decibels.
