CHANDIGARH: The National Achievement Survey (NAS) on performance of Class X students, conducted by the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) across the country has bad news for Chandigarh. At less than 50%, the Class X board exam results of government schools left the Tricity shocked. What is worse is that the survey found the best of the students struggling with basic concepts and falling flat where scores are concerned.

The district report card issued by the MHRD shows that 75% to 85% students scored less than 50% in mathematics, science, social science and english. Average scores for Class X students in all the four subjects is below 42%.

A total of 3,556 students from 95 government schools participated in the survey, which was conducted in February, 2018. As reported when the survey was on, authorities in the UT selected sections, including best students for the survey and made them practice extensively. But the district report card (DRC) procured by TOI has nothing to show for it.

Going by details from NAS, a copy of which is with TOI, in mathematics, the average score of students was 36.24%, which was the lowest. In science, it was 38.08%, in English it was 39.83% and in social science, it was 42.38%. Students managed a relatively higher score of 57.11% only in modern Indian language (reading comprehension).

According to the survey, in mathematics, 63.10% students scored below 35% while 21.67% scored below 50%.

In Science, 49.50% students scored below 35% and 33.71% scored below 50%. In social science, 37.92% students scored below 35% and 37.05% scored below 50%. In English, 48.26% students scored below 35% and 28.82% students scored below 50%. In modern Indian languages, 14.26% scored below 35% and 22.85% scored below 50%. The survey put all students below 35% in the risk zone, while those between 36% and 50% fell in the needs improvement category. In modern Indian languages, 14.26% scored below 35% and 22.85% scored below 50%.

The survey put all students below 35% in the risk zone, while those between 36% and 50% fell in the needs improvement category.
