KOCHI: A global scientific congress on Autoimmune Neurology will begin on Saturday. The meet, ‘Indian Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis - ICTRIMS 2018’, will be attended by more than 70 international and national faculty, and eminent speakers from the European Charcot Foundation.
This three-day event, organised by Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN) and Kerala Association of Neurologists (KAN), will be held at Crowne Plaza. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI) is actively participating in this event.
Explaining the significance of the meet, Dr Suresh Kumar, organising secretary and professor of the Department of Neurology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi, said, “The main focus of ICTRIMS 2018 will be on a broad group of autoimmune diseases which affects the central nervous system. The conference gives special emphasis to multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune neuro-degenerative disease which mostly affects young individuals, especially females.”
“Multiple sclerosis for long was considered as a disease predominantly affecting people in the temperate climates. A growing incidence of disease is recorded in Asian countries and the Indian subcontinent, due to viral infections, vitamin D deficiency, and lifestyle changes. In India, the prevalence of disease is about 3-5 per one lakh population, Dr Suresh Kumar said.
The Kerala Association of Neurologists will hold a workshop on Friday to provide updates on diagnosis and management of autoimmune diseases under the theme “Clinical Decisions in MS- How, when and where.”
