NOIDA: A 32-year-old woman was seriously injured after she was knocked down by a speeding auto while crossing the road from a median cut on the Sector 49-72 link road on Wednesday morning.
Cuts have been made on this road to construct four U-turns. The auto driver has been detained.

The woman, Babli Singh, was crossing the road after dropping her son off at Manav Rachna International School in Sector 51 around 7 am for karate classes there.

Babli’s brother Pawan Chaunkar, who stays in Jewar, told TOI she has been staying in Amrapali Silicon City, Sector 76, with her husband and two children since May. “I got a call around 10 am from a neighbour saying that my sister had been hit by an auto and has been admitted to the Neo Hospital in Sector 50,” he said.

Captain Piyush Srivastava, who brought the woman to the hospital, said the auto driver was speeding while coming from Sector 76. He hit the woman who was crossing the road through the cut on the divider of the main Sector 49-72 link road opposite Amrapali Silicon City.

The woman suffered a fracture in her shoulder, injuries in her legs and a serious wound on the left side of her face. According to a doctor, her face has been badly damaged as glass from the windsheild of the auto shattered and got crushed in it.

She underwent a surgery on her face and was shifted to the general ward in the evening before being discharged. Pawan said the police were initially more focused on looking for the auto driver instead of lodging an FIR.

“They only accepted our complaint after the news reached mediapersons,” he said.

While the Sector 49 police station has received the complaint, officers had not yet filed an FIR when this report was filed.

Sector 49 SHO Avnish Dixit said the auto driver Devender has claimed that he was ferrying five people in the auto and the woman was coming from the wrong side when the accident occured. He has been detained, sources said.
