VARANASI: Recovery of two sealed-pack new mobile phones along with chargers and packet of ganja near barracks of the district jail a day after killing of dreaded don Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangi in Baghpat jail left the jail authorities sweating till Tuesday late night.

The central jail's senior jail superintendent Ambarish Gaud, also holding the charge of district jail, said after proper investigation it became clear that the new mobile phones, chargers and ganja had been thrown inside the jail from adjoining area of Hukulganj locality and had not been taken inside from the only entrance point.

During their routine movement on Tuesday late afternoon, two prison guards noticed some packets between barrack 12 and 13 of the jail. When they checked it, they recovered two new mobile phones in sealed packs, three chargers and a packet of ganja. They immediately reported the matter to jailer Pavan Kumar Trivedi.

Gaud said that following these developments, a massive checking drive was carried out in and around the jail. During investigation of the jail officials, he said, it became clear that the mobile phones and other articles were thrown inside the jail from adjacent area of Hukulganj locality.

The incident had brought the jail officials on toes as it took place a day after the killing of Bajrangi in Baghpat jail.

Following Bajrangi's killing, the jail officials in state were in high alert. If the jail officials are to be believed, extra alert was being maintained in the district and central jails of Varanasi in view of the past history. At the gate of district jail, Bajrangi's shooter Annu Tripathi had killed one Banshi Yadav, who had ended relation with this don after remaining associated with him for long, in 2002. In 2005, Tripathi was also sprayed with bullets inside the central jail.

Regarding the exercise taking place inside the jails to avoid recurrence of untoward incident Gaud said that lists of members of rival gangs and groups staying in the same jail are being prepared in both district and central jail.

On completion of this list, he said, measures like keeping them in separate jails of barracks will be initiated.
