ZIRAKPUR: Two
stray dogs brought a VIP Road
couple down along with its scooter in the area in Zirakpur on Monday evening. Ketan Manocha and his wife, Komal Manocha, were on their way home from a gurdwara when attacked and had to be moved to a hospital.
Ketan Manocha said: “After offering prayers at Nadha Sahib, we were heading home when the canines charged at us. I lost control of the scooter and my wife and I fell off. Some passersby spotted us and moved us to a nearby private hospital.” The couple is still under treatment. Ketan broke two teeth in the incident, and his wife was also injured.
The terror of stray dogs has bitten the VIP Road residents. Many complaints at a TOI event on Sunday were from Savitry Towers, where TOI sent its team after the session. Manmeet Kaur, 60, of Savitry Towers, who survived being attacked by a pack of stray dogs recently, said: “When the canines ripped my clothes during my evening walk within the housing society, I thought it was the last day of my life. I had forgotten my mobile phone at home and could see nobody who could help. I thanked God that my 2-year-old granddaughter wasn’t with me at that time. I just stood motionless and left everything to fate. I haven’t left home since that harrowing experience.”
Her husband, Manjit Singh, had said at the TOI event: “We give a monthly maintenance fee of Rs1,200 to the housing society but it does nothing to drive away the stray dogs. My wife is scared to step outside now and I’m helpless despite drawing the attention of the municipal corporation to this issue repeatedly.” The society has reported at least four cases of dog bite, yet residents lack awareness about what to do in these cases.
The Municipal Council of Zirakpur has not yet started the process of dog sterilisation. Residents live in the fear of getting bitten by the dogs who now own their streets. The local welfare association said it had become difficult for citizens to even step out of their houses because packs of stray dogs patrol the roads.
