GANDHINAGAR: Former BJP MLA Dr
Kanu Kalsariya (below), who left the BJP in 2012 and lost assembly elections in 2012 and 2017 while contesting as an independent candidate, officially joined the Congress after meeting Congress president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday.
After leaving the BJP, Kalsariya had joined the
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) before the 2017 assembly polls. Kalsariya met Rahul during his 2017 assembly campaign but did not formally join the Congress.
Kalsariya, who represented the
Mahuva (
Bhavnagar) assembly seat till 2012, was expelled from the BJP after he led a farmer movement against then chief minister
Narendra Modi, opposing a cement plant on fertile agricultural land.
Kalasariya, who belongs to the Ahir (OBC) community, is well-known for his social work through a trust hospital. He is likely to contest the Bhavnagar Lok Sabha seat.
