CHENNAI:P Saravana Krishnan defeated Vinay R Jumani in the third round of the 8th St Joseph’s Fide-rated chess tournament on Tuesday. He was in the leading pack of players on three points each.

Magesh shines
D Magesh’s 63 paved the way for Wheels India RC to beat Stag CC by 58 runs in a third division match of the TNCA -Thiruvallur DCA league. Brief scores: Wheels Ind RC 167/9 in 30 ovs (D Magesh 63, T Ramasamy 4/38) bt Stag CC 109 in 22.5 ovs (Dennis Michael Joseph 4/34, Karam Pal Jangra 3/25).

Hemanth cracks ton
A strokefull century 102 off just 65 balls by opener B Hemanath propelled Chennai Public School, Thirumazhisai, to thrash Ahobila Mutt Higher Secondary School by 166 runs in the Sacred Heart’s under-14  round robin cricket tournament, at Reddy Santhospuram grounds. Hemanath was adjudged Man of the Match. Brief scores: Chennai Public School (Thirumazhisai) 236/5 in 30 ovs (B Hemanath 102, S Sriman 38, S Hrithish 46) bt Ahobila Mutth HSS 70 all out in 19.2 ovs (Abinash 37, S Sriman 4/10).

Children’s football
About 1500 children from 96 schools will take part in the Goethe Institut Chennai-Rotary Club of Madras East inter-school football super league tournament to be played from August 1. The tournament  will be conducted simultaneously in Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore and Chennai. With the motto of ‘Empower the Girl’, Energize the World’, the club aims to promote the game of football with 400 girls participating in this tournament. In all, there are 32 girls teams.
