State hikes compensation for families of mauling victims

Pune: The Maharashtra government, on Monday, increased the compensation to the family of victims mauled by wild animals by Rs 2 lakh. Now the kin of victim would get Rs 10 lakh compensation.

Similarly,  farmers whose cattle were killed by wild animals would get Rs 40,000 each. Earlier the farmers used to get Rs 25,000. 

An announcement in this regard was made by State Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar while replying to debate on supplementary demands in State Legislative Assembly. According to the forest officials, it was a long-pending demand from the victims’ families. Of the Rs 10 lakh,  Rs 3 lakh would be in cash and rest would be deposited in their bank accounts. As per the Forest Department, since 2010, ten persons have been killed and 39 injured in leopard attacks in Pune district.
