Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the Maharashtra government to initiate action against vehicles ferrying school students, without following the law. The high court has asked the government to submit an ‘action taken’ report on July 17.
A division bench of Justices Naresh Patil and Girish Kulkarni was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the NGO Parents Teachers Association (PTA) United Forum, seeking implementation of rules pertaining to school buses.
The PIL, filed through advocate Rama Subramanian, seeks implementation of the rules, which impose conditions on school buses like the mandatory presence of a female attendant on board, a first aid kit among others.
During the course of the hearing, government pleader Abhinandan Vagyani informed the bench of the ‘special drive’ launched by the government against vehicles, which contravene the rules. He said that the nearly 15-day long crackdown on errant vehicles, is likely to end on July 15.
Having heard the submissions, the bench directed the government to place on record the action taken report on July 17, the next date of hearing.
