BENGALURU: An environmentalist, who is doing her bit towards
tree conservation in the city, was allegedly threatened by realtors late last week.
Prreeya Narayan, who was on a morning walk on New BEL Road on Friday, received a call and accused of removing advertisement posters stapled on to trees. “If you don’t stop this, we will barge into your home and vandalise it,” the caller said.
The homemaker, who is associated with Save Green, had removed over 50 real-estate advertisement posters stapled on trees along New BEL Road over the past few days.
“A couple of realtors had earlier met me while I was going for a walk and told me to stop taking down their posters. I explained to them the reason, and for the next couple of days they didn’t put up anything. But soon the posters returned,” said Prreeya.
Worried, she filed a complaint with Sadashivanagar police. “There are two main reasons why puncturing of trees should stop. It damages the tree tissue and the hole in the bark allows insects and other viruses to thrive,” she explained.
Set up on February 14, 2014, Save Green works for protection of trees and is run by 20 permanent members and several volunteers. Till date, the organisation has saved more than 500 trees, which have fallen prey to real-estate advertisers. “The advertisement menace is common in Domlur, New Thippasandra, HAL, Indiranagar and HSR Layout,” said Hemath K, founder of Save Green.
“We are supporting Prreeya with everything she needs and we will file an FIR if needed,” Hemanth said.
