Project cost to be € 8.8 million, to predict dry spells after monsoon begins

As part of the International Climate Initiative and supported by German Federal Ministry for the Environment and Nature Conservation, a € 8.8 million project for the period 2018 to 2021 dealing with building Climate Capacities in India with Telangana as a case study was launched in Potsdam at Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) on Tuesday.

Vemulawada legislator, who is also Indo-German Climate Research Project Chairman Chennamaneni Ramesh formally launched the project in the presence of leader of the project Thiago Garcia, coordinator Claudia Meintzinger, monsoon forecasting expert Elena Surovyatkina and scientific advisor Srinivas Reddy and other scientists dealing with climate, hydrology and water resources, agriculture and migration. This project, which is cooperating with Prof. Jaya Shankar Telangana Agriculture University, proposes to reduce the gap between climate research and its application in policy, business and societal decisions, particularly regarding agriculture, hydrology and water resources and migration issues.

Based on the collection, processing and analysis of local atmospheric data, this project proposes to provide a newly-developed method for the early prediction of the monsoon in Telangana districts and local agro-climatic regions and make this available for different users on the individual, agricultural and governmental level.

So as to predict dry spells after monsoon begin, which have become a serious problem for the farmers like this year, it is proposed to give early climate impact information, forecasts on possible dry spells, predictions and scenarios for the agricultural sector, based on a user-oriented, integrated crop model for the farmers.

It was also proposed to design a hydrological model of Godavari basin of Telangana and Maharashtra, focusing on Kaleshwaram project.
