Ludhiana institute develops vaccine to protect pigs from swine fever

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Veterinary Vaccine Institute in Ludhiana, in collaboration with the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), has developed vaccine to protect pigs from swine fever.

Minister of animal husbandry, dairy development, and labour department Balbir Singh Sidhu on Tuesday launched the vaccine by distributing it among the pig farm owners.

The minister said after Karnataka, Punjab was the second state in the country but first in North India to prepare this vaccine. The minister said rabbits were killed earlier during the trial of old procedure for manufacturing the vaccine but now only pig cell culture-based technology was being used to test it.

Sidhu also asked the scientists to develop vaccine for protecting cows from mastitis disease. The minister also congratulated the veterinary scientists for the Hoemorrhagic Septicemia vaccine used for cattle disease and announced to honour them with appreciation certificates.
