ROURKELA:  Soaring price of vegetables in Rourkela city and the rest of Sundargarh district has burnt a hole in the common man’s pocket. Majority of the vegetables are priced between `60 and `120 per kg and some even more. Sources in the retail market said capsicum and bean are priced at `120 per kg while other commonly consumed vegetables such as teasel gourd, bitter gourd, ridge gourd,  pointed gourd (potal), tomato, plantain, cow pea and carrots are being sold at `60 per kg.

While coriander leaves are being sold at `200 per kg, ginger is priced at `100 per kg. Similarly, garlic is selling at `60 per kg and green chilli is available for `50-`60 per kg. Brinjal and cucumber are priced at `40-`50 per kg. Potato is also relatively costlier at `18-`20 per kg and onion is priced at `20 per kg. Sources said a hike in onion price is likely soon.

Retail vendors attributed the sky-rocketing prices to lack of adequate supply. The need of Rourkela is met by vegetables grown in Nuagaon, Bisra, Kuarnmunda and Lathikata blocks of Sundargarh besides neighbouring Jharkhand. Agriculture officials said the situation would continue till the arrival of new crops in the market.
