CHENNAI:Renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr Madan Mohan Reddy launched opulent, gold knee implant, here on Tuesday. Speaking about the implant at a press conference, Dr Reddy said that it offers the patient comfort, safety and longevity. It is the latest advanced technology coated with Titanium Niobium Nitride material and it gives the implant a golden colour. The golden implant provides biocompatibility and longevity in addition to the regular properties of the Cobalt Chromium Molybdenum (CoCrMo).
Also wear and tear of opulent implant is almost 40 per cent less than other CoCrMo implants. “The hi-flexion design provides full flexion of leg and allows the patient to squat, kneel and climb stairs,” Dr Reddy added.
Dr Reddy, who is also a consultant in Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, said, “I did a knee replacement surgery on a 62-year-old man from Andhra Pradesh using opulent implant at Apollo Hospital, Chennai. I used this new device because patient wanted to get back to normal activities immediately.”
The doctors said that the technology was introduced in USA and European countries 20 years ago. But, it has come to India recently. The cost of the implant is around `74,000. The patient can get back to his/her routine within 10 days of the surgery without any support. Also, physiotherapy is not required. “This will be useful for people in their 40s as the longevity is more when compared to other implants,” Dr Reddy added.
According to a research, around 1.5 lakh joint replacement surgeries are performed in India, every year. This number is expected to increase by 25 per cent in the coming decade owing to sedentary lifestyle, improvement in healthcare and infrastructure, and the ageing population, a press release added.
