Couple found hanging in their house in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar

A plumber and his wife were found hanging from the ceiling of their house in Uttam Nagar on Tuesday morning. Police said that the couple often used to fight and suspect that it was one such fight that instigated them to end their life. No suicide note has been found and families have not raised suspicion of any foul play.

The deceased couple was identified as 26-year-old Neeraj Kumar and his wife Anita, 23.

According to the police, the duo got married in November last year. Ramesh, Anita’s father, who is also a plumber and used to work with Neeraj, told the police that Neeraj did not report to work on Tuesday morning.

“Ramesh said that when he did not see Neeraj at work, he tried to call him but his calls went unanswered. Ramesh then visited their house to meet Neeraj around 10.30 am. He met him and asked why he did not come to work. To this, Neeraj said that he was not feeling well. Anita also did not disclose anything but she seemed upset,” said a senior police officer not authorised to speak to media.

Ramesh told police that after this he returned to his home in Om Vihar.

“Ramesh said that he tried to call his daughter again to ask for Neeraj’s well being but she did not respond to his calls. Ramesh repeatedly tried to get through to Neeraj on the phone but was unsuccessful. Becoming suspicious, he visited the couple’s home again where he found both of them hanging. He raised alarm and called neighbours who reported the matter to police,” the police officer said.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka), Santosh Kumar Meena said that the duo were rushed to a hospital where they were pronounced dead.

“Bodies were handed over to families after post-mortem. Preliminary enquiry revealed that the couple often had arguments that led to fights. On Monday night, they had a heated argument and neighbours had to intervene. Since no suicide note was recovered and no foul play is suspected, the matter is being probed from all possible angles,” Meena said.
