CHANDIGARH: A
gang of four thieves used the old trick of distraction to fool an
immigration consultant first and then an NRI (non-resident Indian) in the
Sector 22-D market. They took away cash, jewellery, and a laptop computer.
Around noon, they marked immigration consultant Himanshu near his office. His laptop and a bag containing Rs 52,000 were on the front seat of this car.
When he stepped out, one the conspirators approached him and told him he had dropped a few currency notes. When Himanshu bent over to collect the cash, another plotter took away the items from the other front door. The security camera of one of the nearby shops caught him in the act.
The gang then targeted Australia-based NRI Shaminder Singh, who lives in Mohali with his mother and younger brother and had come to a friend’s hotel. Shaminder left his mother and brother back in the car. One of the plotters approached Shaminder’s brother and told him they guy had called him. As he went out, another member of the gang knocked at the car window and told his mother that a few currency notes lay outside. When she got down, another man fled with a bag stolen from the car. The bag contained 6000 Australian dollars and Rs 5 lakh cash, besides 7-gram jewellery. Police have lodged FIRs (first-information reports) but made no arrest.
