The district jail at Kandi would soon become self-sufficient and is expected to be financially surplus by 2020, said Jail Superintendent Santosh Kumar Rai, addressing a press meet here on Wednesday. The district jail authorities have been running a steel industry that recently received a whooping ₹3.45 crore order. It has already delivered goods worth ₹1.1 crore to customers and has earned a profit of about ₹18 lakh.

The jail is also set to open a petrol bunk run by prisoners. They would be offered a salary of ₹12,000. Another petrol bunk is being planned near the old jail, Mr. Rai said. The Ayurvedic Village run by the jail authorities is also serving as a source of revenue and has earned about ₹3.36 lakh so far.

Mr. Rai said they would also start a food court on the premises of RTO office located at Kandi soon.
