MUMBAI:
Police arrested the promoter of a private firm,
Yunus Maniyar (46), for cheating over 1,500 investors of Rs 20 crore. The accused, who bought and developed 10 lakes for prawns farming in
Palghar and purchased 100 acres of land for farming, had promised 120% annual returns on investments.
The complainant, a senior clerk working in the administrative department of the Delhi police, along with his relatives had invested Rs 27 lakh in the accused’s business.
The case was first registered at the
Goregaon police station in January 2015 and later transferred to the city’s economic offences wing (EOW).
The complainant, Pawankumar Gupta, told the police that he had been lured into putting his money into the venture after being promised 10% monthly returns on his investment. Gupta said that he received returns for a year and later there were delayed payments. Gupta approached the police after the payments stopped.
The police had earlier arrested four directors of Mega Fine Agro Concept Pvt Ltd namely Tahir Hora, Siraji Patani, Shan Fatima and Mahesh Parekh. Maniyar fled Mumbai and came in touch with some conmen in Punjab and was engaged in similar schemes.
The Punjab police arrested Maniyar for floating fraudulent schemes. The Mumbai police learnt about his arrest and took his custody from Punjab’s Nabha jail.
