‘Approach CBFC on Uppara meeting issue’, says Hyderabad High Court

HYDERABAD: Refusing to intervene in a PIL case seeking to restrain usage of the word “Uppara meeting” in comedy shows, TV serials, movies and so on, a division bench of the Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday made it clear to the petitioner to approach the regulating body i.e. the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and those telecasting it if he has any objection.
The bench of Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan and Justice Ramesh Ranganathan was dealing with a PIL filed by Karnati Kannayya from West Godavari, AP, seeking direction to AP and TS governments to restrain usage of word “Uppara meeting” in serials, movies and shows.
The petitioner’s counsel told the court that the said usage was offending the Uppara community (people belonging to a caste, whose occupation is digging tanks and wells). The bench said that courts would not intervene on such issues and asked the petitioner to approach the concerned authorities with his grievance.

A division bench of HC on Tuesday directed AP and TS governments to tell it about the number of food safety officers appointed by them and steps taken to curb use of calcium carbide in artificial ripening of fruits. It also asked the amicus curiae to submit details about disadvantages of using carbide, its formula and the origin of its production.
