HYDERABAD: The state government has decided to challenge the High Court’s interim order that the total reservation in the panchayat raj elections should not cross 50 per cent in the apex court.
“The state government will make appeal to the Supreme Court,” chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said here on Tuesday. Rao decided that the government should file an appeal in the Supreme Court urging it that the earlier permission given by the apex court to implement 61 pc reservation, including 34 pc for Backward Classes, in Telangana to be reinstated.
The chief minister instructed the cabinet sub-committee to meet on Wednesday and do necessary exercise for filing a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court’s interim orders that the total reservation in the panchayat raj elections should not cross 50 per cent. Rao, according to an official press release issued here on Tuesday, suggested that the additional advocate-general as well as all the officers concerned be invited to the cabinet sub-committee meeting on Wednesday for finalising the contents of the petition to be filed in the apex court. The government will urge the Supreme Court that the state should be allowed to provide 61 pc reservation in panchayat elections.
Rao criticised the Congress for having a petition filed in HC through its party sarpanch Swapna Reddy opposing the 34 pc reservation to backward classes and thus obstructing the reservation to BCs. “The state government is fully committed to providing 34 per cent reservation to BCs and necessary legal battle will be fought to achieve it,” Rao said.
