GOVT TO RELEASE 12L FISHLINGS IN RIVER BEAS IN NEXT FOUR MONTHS

To infuse a new lease of life to the Beas river, that was polluted after releasing of molasses, the Punjab Government has decided to release 12 lakh fishlings in the river in a phased manner in the next four months.

“The state Wildlife Department has submitted a detailed action plan to the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) under which three lakh fishlings of adequate size shall be released in the River Beas every month during coming four months,” said state Environment Minister OP Soni on Tuesday.

Besides, adequate fish from the Pong Dam shall also be procured, after the breeding season of fish is over, for release in river Beas in Punjab.

Soni said that adequate funds shall be made available to the Wildlife and other government agencies to rehabilitate and revitalize the aquatic life in River Beas.

After the incidents of leakage of molasses from the Chadha Sugar Mill in Beas river, lakhs of fish and other aquatic life killed due to decreased dissolved oxygen in the river water. For the same, the PPCB had already taken action to prosecute the Mill management in addition to impose a fine of Rs five crore by way of endowment fund for the rejuvenation of aquatic life in the river. In addition the mill was sealed.
