In the wake of shocking incident of selling infants to couples breaching the adoption norms from a shelter home – Missionaries of Charity, Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Tuesday instructed the Jharkhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (JSCPCR) to submit a consolidated report about the NGOs and shelter homes functioning across the State.

The CM, during a review meeting, asked the Chairperson of JSCPCR to mark all such shelter homes, NGOs involved in depraved activities to the State government by August 15.

The CM said that the Government will take stern action against such NGOs and institutions that are selling infants and taking benefit of destitute women. During the meeting, the CM instructed the officials of JSCPCR to prepare an unbiased report of institutions working for women and children in distress covering all pre-requisites.

“I will be conducting meeting with the NGOs — working for child rights, women, including other members of the commission soon to draft a plan as how to go about it. A district-wise team will be appointed starting from those places from where maximum atrocious cases of violation of child rights, trafficking etc are reported,” said JSCPCR Chairperson Aarti Kujur.

Considering the case of illegal trade of children at a shelter home here, the nodal agency for protection of child rights had written to Chief Secretary Sudhir Tripathi to constitute a team to conduct raids covering all shelter homes, NGOs (Private and Government) operating across the State for collecting first hand inputs about their nature of operation.

The letter was sent to the Chief Secretary on July 5 soon after the incident came into limelight on July 4. The JSCPCR Chairperson has admitted that a formal inspection of NGOs has become mandatory now to bust the vicious cycle of child trafficking.
