All India Motor Transport Congress: Truckers’ body in Chennai seeks support for nation-wide strike

CHENNAI: The national truckers’ body, All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), is reaching out to ground zero in its efforts to mobilise support for the nation-wide indefinite strike from July 20, pressing demands including changing the daily revision of fuel costs and rationalising the road toll.Top AIMTC leaders are flying down to meet zonal, district and taluk-level associations of truck operators across the country gearing up for the strike.
“The AIMTC is reaching out to the zonal, district and taluk level associations to explain them the compelling situation to go for the strike to force the government to fulfil the key demands,” Bal Malkit Singh, chairman, core committee, AIMTC, told Express on Tuesday.He said the truck operators were preparing for making a big impact through the strike by mustering support from ground zero. “This strike is going to be different from the previous ones. We will create a big impact,” he stated.

Bal Malkit Singh, ex-president of AIMTC, addressed a meeting in Chennai on Tuesday organised by various trucks and goods vehicle operators to discuss the preparations for the strike. South Zone Motor Transport Association (SIMTA) leader GR Shanmugappa was also present at the event.
The Centre has not responded so far to a memorandum submitted by the truckers in connection with their demands, Bal Malkit Singh noted.The main demands are changing the daily revision of the fuel price, rationalising road toll collection and reducing the hike made in third party insurance premium.The Centre has not responded so far to the issue despite the AIMTC sending a memorandum last month explaining the demands.
