CHANDIGARH: Junior women doctors at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, have alleged patients and attendants have sexually harassed them in four separate cases over the last 10 days.

According to directorprincipal Dr B S Chavan, a committee has been set up after TOI contacted the hospital on Monday. However, none of the accused has been caught. These doctors were on duty in emergency and wards, when patients allegedly touched them inappropriately. A police complaint was lodged in one case on July3, while the others were dismissed as “part and parcel of the profession”.

“These junior doctors are traumatized due to insecure environment in the hospital. We had reported to the medical superintendent about these incidents. In one of the cases, police was called and the patient was made to shift to other ward. And in another incident, the medical superintendent rejected the case as part and parcel of our profession,” said a senior resident doctor of GMCH.

Dr Ravi Gupta, medical superintendent, however, said, “We were the one who reported the case to the police. What can be done with psychopath patients who dare to tease doctors and do not respect women?” Narrating about these incidents, a doctor said one of the patients was caught in a ward making a video of a woman doctor while she was tending to other patients. One of the relatives of a patient slapped the buttocks of a doctor and fled. There was a patient who complained of fever and while the doctor was making his case history, he held her by the waist.

“We have formed a committee which will look into the matter and other security issues. A resident doctor in gynaecology department was handed over a sealed letter. When she opened it, she found threats had been issued. So, we are working on effective security for our hospital,” said the director- principal.
