SHRC questions use of pepper spray by police on inebriated men

The Commission questioned the method’s admissibilty and sought a report within two weeks

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report about police stations in Ambattur being distributed pepper spray to tackle inebriated persons disturbing the public, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has issued a notice to senior police officers questioning the decision.

The Comission sought for a report from the Director General of Police, Chennai Police Commissioner and Ambattur’s Deputy Commissioner within two weeks. They questioned under which provision of the law the police were using pepper spray for controlling intoxicated persons and that this would injure their eyes, leading to a human rights violation.

According to the report, the police had purchased 400 bottles of pepper spray from Bengaluru and distributed them to police stations.
