CUTTACK:  The old and decaying Arunodaya Market Complex is all set for a makeover. The Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) has started process for its repair and renovation with an aim to woo takers and increase rental income. The civic body had constructed the market complex in 1962. Beside functioning of CDA’s own office, several Government and private establishments were running from the complex. But due to lack of maintenance, the buildings started decaying and gradually became unsafe.

The situation came to such a pass that the doors and windows broke down and rain water started seeping through the roof of the dilapidated buildings following which many private establishments shifted their offices.Subsequently, some Government offices including Income Tax, Treasury and a branch of SBI were shifted to other places. With no one willing to take the dilapidated rooms of the market complex on rent, the CDA started losing revenue.

With no takers and the revenue collection falling, the CDA authorities decided to go for repair and renovation of the market complex at an estimated cost of `1.5 crore.Accordingly, the civic body recently issued notices to all the owners and proprietors of private firms, business establishments to vacate their rooms and offices for repair and renovation work.

Vice-Chairman of CDA Sarat Chandra Nayak said, “We have invited tender for repair and renovation of the dilapidated Arunodaya Market Complex and it is now in the final stage. Work will begin after finalisation of tender process.”To generate more revenue, the CDA has also planned to construct a multi-storey building on PPP mode at vacant space on the premises of market complex. The CDA has already prepared a detailed project report for the same, he added. Later, CDA will go for renovation of its Dinabandu Bipani Market Complex at Buxibazaar, he informed.
