Water connections in unauthorised colonies to be regularised

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has decided to regularise water connections in unauthorised colonies of the national Capital. The move will provide relief to thousands of people living in these areas in the coming months.

A 140th Board meeting of the DJB, chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who is also the chairman of DJB, the scheme to regularise unauthorised water connections for a period of three months was approved.

"This will provide relief to thousands of people," Kejriwal said in a tweet. There are a large number of unauthorised water connections in various parts of Delhi, especially in the unauthorised colonies, which causes loss of revenue while posing danger of contamination, a government official said.

Several other key projects and schemes to improve water and waste water services were also approved in Board meeting.

The board approved realisation of development charges before sanction of new water connection from separate dwellings, the last date of penalty on rainwater harvesting in Dwarka sub city extended from July 1 to September 1 and laying of sewer line in Begumpur group of unauthorised colonies which will benefit a population of about 2.45 lakh, the official said.

Rehabilitation of Yamuna Vihar waste water treatment plant with the project cost project is 90 crores, construction of master balancing reservoir at Palla, were also approved by the DJB, he said.

The official further said that laying sewer lines in Sainik Nagar group of colonies in Matiyala Constituency has also been approved. "This will improve the environmental and unhygienic conditions of the area. It will also check pollution in river by trapping untreated sewer currently flowing in to the drains and ultimately into the River Yamuna," he said.

In another decisions, the board also approved laying of internal and peripheral sewer lines in Kamruddin Nagar group of colonies falling under 'Nilothi Waste Water Treatment Plant' catchment area in Delhi.
