Heavy rain lashes northern districts

With the southwest monsoon remaining active over Kerala, the northern districts received heavy rain on Tuesday, keeping the administration on alert.

The weather office has forecast active monsoon conditions over the south peninsula for the next five to six days. As many as 14 relief camps were opened at various locations in Wayanad to relocate families whose houses were flooded by storm waters following torrential rain.

The shutters of the Kabani reservoir across the Kabani river at Beechanahalli in Karnataka were opened on Tuesday noon to prevent floodwaters from rising. The district received an average of 113.33 mm rainfall on Tuesday.

Heavy rains affected traffic movement in Kochi and damaged houses in other parts of Ernakulam district. Sea conditions are very likely to remain very rough over major parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during next five days. The met office here has advised fishermen not to venture out to sea.

The India Met Department has forecast widespread rain in Kerala till July 14. A a weather outlook issued on Tuesday has warned of heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm in 24 hrs) at some places till July 14 with very heavy rainfall (12 to 20cm in 24hrs) likely on Wednesday.

Schools and colleges in Kottayam and Idukki districts will remain closed on Wednesday in anticipation of heavy rains.
