HYDERABAD:The Jawaharnagar dumping yard which turned into a environmental hazard is being capped. The biggest capping project being taken in the country at Jawaharnagar dumping yard contain the environmental impacts of uncontrolled waste dumping.

GHMC Mayor Bonthu Rammohan along with GHMC officials inspected the capping works at Jawaharnagar dumping yard and said that capping project is going to become a role model for the country. Nearly 85 percent of the   works have been completed and remaining  works would be completed soon. The area is spread over 135 acres.

The waste to energy plant generating 19 mega watt from garbage is going to installed at the site, for generating power from waste, it requires 1,600 tonnes of garbage on daily basis. The power plant would start functioning from March 2019, Hyderabad will be second city after Delhi to generate power from waste, Mayor said.      

The capping project will help in managing leachate production by controlling the ingress of water into the waste, prevent uncontrolled escape of landfill gas and odours or the entry of air into the waste.
The capping activity aims to stop intrusion of storm water into the waste mass thus by reducing leachate and to tap the gas from the waste mass. Terra consult, UK an insign the cap system for international consultancy have been engaged for the capping activity at  Jawaharnagar.
