Residents and other users of Edward Park Street, a narrow road in Otteri, have to inevitably pass a pile of construction debris dotted by used plastic packaging and household waste.

Construction debris dotted by used plastic packaging and household waste on Edward Park Street
Chennai:
Despite multiple complaints, the Greater Chennai Corporation has failed to remove the debris.
On one side of the Edward Park Street, a line of parked cars occupy the space and on the other side, construction debris lines almost a quarter of the carriageway.
Mingled with the debris is various household wastes – plastic, food waste and other trash – even as two of Corporation’s grey coloured dustbins are a few meters away. On what is remaining of the sidewalk, the Corporation’s tricycle for garbage collection is parked, while plastic bags full of trash lie around the stationary vehicle.
Muthu K, an auto driver, said that the debris has been there for months now. “I have been parking my auto on this road. The Corporation never cleans the construction debris, though they remove the other garbage,” he said, adding that several complaints by the residents have gone unheeded.
Speaking to DT Next, A V Afroze Ahmed, an activist vocal about the civic issues in the Otteri and its surrounding neighbourhoods, pointed out that despite several complaints, no action has been taken – not only in this street but also other parts of Otteri.
“The Corporation officials turn a blind eye to the neighbourhood, which is languishing – from official apathy. I have complained several times to the Corporation – through the 1913 helpline number and the Namma Chennai app – about garbage dumping in another street here – but no action was taken.
From the parks to the roads, all the infrastructure is badly maintained giving the neighbourhood a bad name,” said the activist.
When contacted, a Corporation official said that only recently a drive was conducted to remove the construction debris from these areas. “There is a schedule to remove this and we will look into this street at the earliest,” added the official.
