Mae Dos Pobres sink Assumpta Convent; Alex HSS, Mount Mary’s HS secure wins

A strike each in either half by Shenoy Colaco and substitute Delson Rebello helped Mae Dos Pobres HS, Nuvem go past Assumpta Convent HS, Sarzora 2-0 and reach the pre-quarterfinals of Subroto Mukherjee Cup U-17 inter-school football tournament being played at artificial grounds, Fatorda-Margao, on Tuesday.

Alex HSS, Curtorim and Mount Mary’s HS, Chinchinim meanwhile have also made it to the pre-quarterfinals after winning their respective matches.

Mae Dos Pobres went into the lead as early as the 5th minute through a powerful strike that gave no chance at all to Beran Fernandes, the goalkeeper of Assumpta Convent HS, Sarzora.

After conceding the goal, Assumpta Convent made some penetrating forays but seemed to lose the plot on entering the rival box.

Both the teams had few chances in the second session, but the goalkeepers from either side demonstrated fine abilities to pluck the ball from the air.

And with five minutes left for the final hooter, Nuvem school struck once again through substitute Delson Rebello, whose power-packed knee high shot crashed to the far corner of the nets.

In the day’s other match, St Alex HSS, Curtorim defeated Bethany Convent HS, Sao Jose de Areal 2-0. Priston Gomendes and Josley Fernandes scored a goal each for the winners.

In the last match of the day, Mount Mary’s HS, Chinchinim thrashed Manovikas English Medium HS, Margao 4-0. Shario Gomes scored a brace while the other two goals were scored by Rizlie Fernandes and Gladrick R
