Inflow into Mettur Dam crosses 30,000 cusecs mark

more-in

The realisation of water in River Cauvery at Mettur rose to 30,964 cusecs on Tuesday evening, thanks to the continuous discharge of water from the Karnataka reservoirs following widespread rainfall in the catchment areas.

The water released from the Karnataka reservoirs reached Mettur Dam via Hogenakkal late Monday evening.

Due to the copious inflow, the storage level of the dam rose by 2.49 ft in the last 24 hours – from 63.72 ft on Monday to 66.21 ft on Tuesday evening.

This is only the second time in the last three weeks that the inflow has crossed 30,000 cusecs mark. The inflow stood at 32,421 cusecs on June 18.

With inflow expected to remain high for the next few days, the storage level will register reasonable increase, according to the Public Works Department sources.

The State Government is expected to open the sluices of the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur for commencing farm operations in the dozen delta districts, once the storage level reached 90 ft mark.

About 1,000 cusecs of water is being discharged from the dam for meeting the drinking water needs of Cauvery region.
