The city traffic police propose to reduce the speed limit of vehicles in city limits to bring down fatal accidents. They have fixed a speed limit of 50 kmph from SITRA to Chinniyampalayam. But vehicles will be allowed to drive at 40 kmph from Avinashi Road flyover to SITRA. Likewise, the speed limit has been revised by RTOs along with the city police.
Police recently convened a few meetings with RTO officials and suggested that the speed limit of all vehicles be reduced in the city limits. They sent the proposal to collector T N Hariharan few months ago and requested him to approve the proposal. The officials are waiting for clearance from the district administration.
As per the proposal, the vehicles should stick to a speed limit of 40kmph from Avinashi Road flyover to SITRA. They can increase the speed to 50 kmph from SITRA to Chinniyampalayam. On 100 Feet Road, Cross Cut Road, Sungam bypass and the new flyover on Dr Nanjappa Road, the speed limit will be 30kmph.
“Vehicles should maintain a speed limit of 30 kmph from Gandhipuram to Ganapathy and can increase to 40 kmph from Ganapathy to Saravanampatti. From Saravanampatti to Karattumedu, the limit is 50kmph” said a traffic police official.
From Athupalam to Eachanari, Athupalam to Sugunapuram, and Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) to Singanallur, the limit suggested is 40kmph. Between Singanallur and Kamatchipuram, the speed limit is 50kmph.
“Motorists can maintain a speed limit of 40 kmph on the rest of city roads. These revised speed limits would reduce fatal accidents in the city,” said Sujit Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Coimbatore city.
After getting approval from the district administration, the revised speed limits will be implemented across the city.
