British Health Minister Jeremy Hunt will replace Boris Johnson as Foreign Minister, Prime Minister Theresa May's Downing Street office said on Monday following Johnson's dramatic resignation over the government's strategy for Brexit.

"The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of... Jeremy Hunt MP as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs," Downing Street said in a statement.

Johnson resigned on Monday, adding to divisions over Brexit that threaten to tear apart May's government.

May's office said in a terse statement that the prime minister had accepted Johnson's resignation and would name a replacement soon.

Johnson, one of the best-known and most flamboyant members of the government, quit just hours after the resignation late Sunday of Brexit Secretary David Davis, the government's top Brexit official.
