Though there are laws and Acts for the welfare of the elderly, younger generation should have moral responsibility in protecting the rights of senior citizens, said Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh, judge, Madras High Court, here on Sunday.
Joint family system
Unlike in Western countries where children live away from their parents, joint family system in India was contributing to the welfare of senior citizens, he observed.
Justice Ramesh, also executive chairman of Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority (TNSLSA), was speaking at the legal literacy awareness programme on the rights of senior citizens organised by District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) here. He handed over law books, computers and furniture to Legal Literacy Clubs of five selected government schools in the district, Coimbatore Central Prison and Special Prison for Women.
At another event organised by DLSA in Tirupur on Sunday, Justice Ramesh said that school and college students should have awareness on the basic laws relating to their rights.
Basic knowledge
In an awareness and prevention camp on ragging at a private college in Kangeyam, Justice Ramesh said that with social media, information on several issues reached the citizens at their finger tips.
Hence, the need of the hour was that every one should have basic knowledge on laws.
