A self-styled god-man has been arrested for allegedly sending indecent messages to a woman, who is a lawyer in a city court, the police said on Sunday.
Hiding at ashram
Ravi Giri, a resident of Bihar’s Bhawanipur village, was arrested from Harihar ashram near Ramlila Maidan on June 29. He had been hiding at the ashram to evade arrest, the police said. The victim’s parents had introduced her to Giri and asked him to find a suitable match for her. However, Giri started sending her lewd messages, the police said.
“ Giri started visiting the victim’s house. Whenever he found her alone, he would start talking about objectionable things. When she resisted, he started sending her obscene messages and videos on WhatsApp,” said a senior officer.
The woman filed a complaint at Hauz Qazi police station. Initially, the police did not have information about Giri’s address. They later received a tip-off that he was hiding at Harihar ashram.
“A team was sent to the ashram, from where Giri was nabbed. We have booked him under Sections 354D [stalking], 506 [punishment for criminal intimidation], 509 [word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman] of the Indian Penal code and Section 67 of The Information Technology Act, 2000 [punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form],” the officer added.
