James Packer resigns from board of family company Consolidated Press
James Packer has resigned from the board of his private family group, Consolidated Press Holdings (CPH) as he continues to wind back his work commitments and focus on his mental health.
According to a notice lodged with ASIC, Mr Packer resigned from the CPH board on June 27. A CPH spokesman confirmed that Mr Packer has resigned from all boards associated with the group.
It comes after Mr Packer unexpectedly resigned from the Crown Resorts board in March, with a spokesperson at the time citing "mental health issues". The billionaire checked himself into a psychiatric hospital in Boston just days after resigning from the Crown board.
CPH holds Mr Packer's 47 per cent shareholding interest in Crown and other businesses.
Both Crown and CPH are being run by people with a long association with him.
John Alexander was appointed Crown's executive chairman in January last year. Around the same time, another long time Packer associate, Guy Jalland, was appointed chief executive of CPH.
Mr Packer's resignation from Crown capped off a particularly turbulent patch for the billionaire.
It started in October 2016 with his high profile break up with Mariah Carey, just as news emerged of Crown employees being detained in China for illegally promoting gambling.
It led to a complete transformation of Crown’s business - with a retreat from its global operations - and a brutal re-arrangement of Mr Packer’s inner circle of personal friends and business confidantes.
More recently, Mr Packer was implicated in the graft probe into Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. There was no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Mr Packer.
Mr Packer was holidaying on the French Riviera when resigning from CPH late last month. He has also been spending significant time in Mexico since checking himself out of the Boston hospital.
