Those who murdered SFI activist Abhimanyu at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, last week had planned to unleash violence on the college campus on a massive scale, revealed a police investigation.
During interrogation, the accused who are currently in police custody confessed that the triggering of a clash with the SFI was intentional. “They wanted to teach a lesson to those who had defaced the Campus Front of India (CFI)’s graffiti and hence were armed to the maximum. Their aim was to inflict maximum damage to the rival camp and Abhimanyu was just one of the targets,” officials said.
Arjun Krishna, who had also sustained injuries in the attack, is recuperating at a private hospital in the city.
No clue yet on hideouts
Even a week into the incident, the police are yet to receive clues about the hideouts of the assailants.
Search operations have been expanded to the neighbouring States, including Karnataka.
On Sunday, K.M. Navas and Jaffri, accused of aiding the assailants to go into hiding, were produced before a magistrate and remanded in custody.
Further, the arrest of Anas, a native of Mattancherry wanted in the case over violence during a High Court march last year, was also recorded.
The registration details of the car recovered from the crime scene suggested that it was owned by a Cherthala native.
Of the eight two-wheelers abandoned here, four were registered in Thripunithura while three were from Mattancherry. The remaining vehicle was registered at the Kothamangalam sub-regional transport office.
Most of these vehicles, presumably used by the assailants to reach the crime scene, were purchased in 2017.
