Tributes poured in from artists and disciples of violin maestro M. Chandrasekaran on the occasion of his 80th birthday celebrations and completion of 70 years of his performance here on Sunday.
N. Murali, president of the Music Academy, said, “In celebrating the life and his continuing accomplishments, we celebrate the human spirit of overcoming adversities and challenges in life.”
“His sight was irreversibly blocked at a very young age, but that didn’t deter him at all. With concentration, willpower, hard work and confidence, he has shown what great things can be achieved. His mother has been an inspiration to him and he now is a role model for many musicians,” he said.
Musician T.N. Seshagopalan said, “The way he plays the violin even now, I begin to wonder if he is 18 or 80. When he just takes the bow and begins to play, one can immediately know what raga it is. With whoever he plays, he brings out the best in that artist. It is a blessing for me that he has played for me for several years now.”
Mr. Chandrasekaran said he was overwhelmed by the love he has received all these years. “I fervently wish I can continue to play well and better and make you all happy,” he said.
V.V. Sundaram, founder of Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, spoke of his great time sense.
“If he has to play for two hours and forty-five minutes, he would stop exactly on time. I wonder how he does that," he said.
The event was followed by a concert by musician Chitraveena N. Ravikiran.
