Dreaded gangster Munna Bajrangi shot dead in Baghpat jail

Bajrangi who was a main accused in the murder of BJP leader Krishnanand Rai was shot at by his isolated cell mate Sunil Rathi.

LUCKNOW: Dreaded gangster and mafia don Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangi was shot dead on Baghpat jail premises early Monday morning. Lodged in a Jhansi jail, Bajrangi was taken to Baghpat on Saturday for appearance in connection with an extortion case against him Baghpat court.

Bajrangi, who belonged to eastern UP and was one of the main accused of senior BJP leader Krishnanand Rai's murder, was lodged in an isolated cell along with two other dreaded gangsters of western UP--- Sunil Rathi and Vicky Suheda.

According to police sources, as Bajrangi was being taken to the police van to be ferried to the local court, he was shot dead by Sunil Rathi. Rathi used a pistol to kill Bajrangi. However, Additional Inspector General, Prison, Sharad claimed that a probe had been ordered into the incident and also the fact that how a firearm was smuggled inside the jail premises. Lapses and loopholes in jail security arrangements would also be looked into, said the ADG.

Notably, Bajrangi's wife Seema had expressed threat to her husband's life few days ago by holding a press conference. She had claimed that Bajrangi was on the hit list of UP police. At one point of times, Bajrangi had operated in close association of mafia-don-turn politician Mukhat Ansari who is also incarcerated in Banda Jail. Active during mid 90s, Munna Bajrangi had a number of cases of loot, extortion, murder and abduction against him. He was also accused of executing shootouts and possessing weapons like AK-47 during his heydays.

Bajrangi had also forayed into politics by contesting election from Mariyahu in Jaunpur as an Apna Dal candidate in 2012 while his wife contested from the same seat in 2017. Bajrangi belonged to Jaunpur only. In 2012, Bajrangi had secured around 36,000 votes while SP MLA Shraddha Yadav polled 55,745 votes and won. Seema Singh had lost the polls in 2017. In March 2016, Bajrangi's younger brother in law who looked after his business Pushpajeet had been killed in Lucknow. The case remains unsolved.
