BARIPADA: The authorities of Baripada municipality in Mayurbhanj district have launched a sanitation drive ahead of the Rath Yatra, the second popular car festival after Puri.

Municipality vice-chairman Jitendra Mohanty said several drains were constructed in all 28 wards before the rainy season. The drive aims to to clean the drains and garbage dumps well ahead of the car festival. The drive has been expedited and more manpower has been hired to address the sanitation woes of the town, he said.

Mohanty said while efforts are being made to clean drains in slums, special attention will be given to the Grand Road to make it garbage-free and clean. The municipality would regularly sweep the road besides sprinkling bleaching powder along both sides of the route, near drains and some unhygienic areas.

A team comprising municipality personnel and public representatives would regularly inspect the Grand Road till the end of the mega festival in the town. Additional dustbins would be provided in places where polythene materials and other waste of eatery shops pollute the environment at the fair ground. The authorities would also sensitise roadside vendors and shopkeepers not to litter and make proper use of the dustbins.
