In a major relief to Mumbai, Tulsi lake, one of the seven lakes quenching the city's thirst, started overflowing today, after heavy rains in the metropolis and adjoining area, bringing relief to residents.
Mumbai has also received over 50 per cent of the season's average rainfall in the last 20 days itself, a BMC official said.
The Tulsi lake began overflowing this morning, he said. Last year, it had started overflowing on August 14, the official added.
The other six lakes which supply water to Mumbai are Vihar, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar and Bhatsa. The seven lakes cater to Mumbai's daily water requirement.
The water quantum in the seven lakes supplying water to the city stood at 5.50 lakh million litres today, the official said.
The total water stock in the lakes need to be over 14 lakh million litres to suffice the city's needs for the year.
Tulsi and Vihar lakes are located in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park here. Tulsi is among the smallest lakes supplying water to Mumbai.
